SOUNDS OF BENATTON

As I sat in "Apt 78" a lounge in the Washington Heights section of NYC chatting it up with up and coming HIP HOP group BENATTON. I realized I came across a very talented group which formed 7 years ago.

Like the clothing brand Benetton; Benatton is a colorful mixture of diverse young men. Luis "Jay" Suarez (who is Dominican), Richard "Parlay" Copier (who is French), and Anthony "ToNe" Woolford (who is African American).

With a very unique sound, they have yet to reach there full potential.
As we chatted over our sangria's, I had them freestyle for me. To my amazement, all three were lyrically animated. This was a classic case of "don't judge a book by its cover." At first glance you would think "ahhh yeah, they probably THINK they can rap." But they amazed the shit out of me.

ToNe has a cool lingo which reminded me of Nikki Minaj (except for the fact he makes sense. Lol).
Parlay who is also the producer, artist & engineer says " I want to be the first white rapper that doesn't sound corny, I want to come across poetic like NAS but sounds like FABOLOUS," and Jay has a rapping J.Cole sound with a touch of Sofrito. When asked about there sound Parlay put it like this: "We are the Beastie Boys mixed with N.E.R.D slapped with Gym Class Heroes.

Each song is diverse in sound: "I'm Famous" has Jay mixing with some Latin lingo. It takes my mind to shining lights in a high class downtown Manhattan club. Parlay raps in "Acting Up" sounding far from a white boy. I imagine bumping this with the windows down in the whip, while "Realease the Kracken" has a rock/hip hop skateboarder feel to it. They are obviously a group that likes to have fun with sounds and makes you want to move.

They are definitely a group that you can and will be hearing a lot about in the near future.

BIG SENCE

Big Sence

Rafael "Big Sence"Sanchez is definitely making his way and proving that Latino’s can make
it in the Hip Hop industry.

“I want to show that we Latin’s can be us. That we are nice on the microphone and can generate sales.”

Raised in the Dominican Republic and the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, Hip-Hop helped inspire and help him adapt to his surroundings. “It motivated me because I did see violence and drugs . Bushwick was a tough neighborhood growing up, it was crack infested and drew our family members to sell or use drugs. When you pressure coal you get diamonds and once I moved back to Brooklyn from D.R. Hip Hop showed me how to adapt to my new environment.”

Sence got into music around the age of eight. He knew Hip-Hop was for him. He loves writing and being creative. “My versatility is something yet to be witnessed in Hip Hop.” As he grew as an artist he came up with the name Big Sence “it’s from the lack of sense people and the world has.”

As any Latin artist trying to break onto the Hip-Hop scene, Sense has dealt with stereotypes and negativity, especially during the Reggaeton era . “Back then if it wasn’t Reggaeton , labels would basically turn down meetings. As Latinos we’ve never gotten the respect we deserve.”

Big Sence has worked with numerous big name artist like: LOON, Joell Ortiz, Juganot as well as opened up shows for artist such as : Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Trina, Bubba Sparxxs, Rick Ross, Zion y Lennox, Fat Joe and Tego Calderon. He currently has a single out with Latin Hip Hop artist Lumidee called Que Lo Que Pasa Aqui.”

Big Sence is both focused and humble, which says a lot about a person. He has a lot of work he is planning on accomplishing. “I plan on reaching the stars, no one plays the game to win little.”

Let's Love not Hate in 2011

It's now 2011 and I hope women has a whole can unite and stop belittling each other.
As woman, we face a lot of insecurities in one way or another:
- I'm to fat/skinny
- I'm ugly
- My hair is to short or nappy
- I'm to light/dark
- I have no chest / or butt
- I don't have a man
- My man cheats
- I have no friends
- My nose is to big/small
And the list goes on...

By feeling this way females tend to hate on each other because they may see another female with something they want and think they need and the hate begins.
By observing females as well as myself it's all about self love and confidence.

Now some woman may have confidence but may still lack self love, ie; "I know I'm pretty and I can get anybody I want." However, when females with that mentality get that somebody they take certain abuse or give to much when only little is given back and are not appreciated.

Now not all women have these problems and are the ones getting hated on but believe majority of women do have some sort of insecure problem. I have felt insecurities and also felt confident but continued to put up with certain things because I didn't love myself. We need to realize we all have something beautiful about us,from the loud-mouth ghetto hand waving girl to the geeky stringy haired no name brand sneaker wearing pimple face nerd. We shouldn't let what someone says or whispers about us deter us in life. Those who constantly whisper and snicker have yet to find out how to love themself. By hating and giving another female dirty looks will only tear you down and people will not have or give you the respect you want or deserve.
In 2011 I hope we can cease the hate and learn to love but love ourselves 1st.
